Bible 365 Devotional

THE BEST WAY TO ANSWER THE CRITICS

1 TIMOTHY 4:12

1 TIMOTHY 4:12 NKJ
12 Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

OBSERVATION:

I was going to entitle this devotional, the best way to silence the critics, but I am not so sure that is possible. The negative people who walk among us rarely yield without a last word.

Paul is encouraging his son in the faith, Timothy, regarding his youth. Timothy was a young man and evidently catching flack regarding his ability to lead the church due to his age.

So, Timothy is instructed how to answer those that despise his youth. We might say today, those who think lightly of or less of him because of his young age.

The best answer is with action, not with words. Paul instructs Timothy to live as an example to the other believers. It's much harder to argue against a Christlike example.

Be an example in word. Paul starts with the importance of making sure Timothy's words were in line with his faith and his devotion to Christ. Paul had already written this church at Ephesus, the one Timothy was leading, to make sure their words were not toxic but words of grace and encouragement. (Ephesians 4:29

An example in conduct. Paul wanted Timothy's life to testify of the goodness of God and of a solid commitment to Him.

An example of love. Not always the easiest task considering a pastor is constantly dealing with people problems in the church.

An example in spirit. Some modern translations leave this word out, but I am going to leave it in. Attitude says a lot. Having a joy-filled, strong attitude about life is an outstanding witness of God's strength and help.

An example of faith. Since faith is how we come into God's Kingdom. And how we operate in God's Kingdom. And how we please God. Being an example in this important area is vital.

An example in purity. Purity in heart, motive, and lifestyle leave little room for the critics or the enemy.

APPLICATION:

Most are not called to be the pastor of a church. But all are called to be an example of Christ. This verse provides a short but powerful checklist on areas we all can focus.

PRAYER:

Lord, show me how and where I can improve as an example.
