TO LIVE IS CHRIST

PHILIPPIANS 1:21-25 
21 For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22 But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor; yet what I shall choose I cannot tell. 23 For I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better. 24 Nevertheless to remain in the flesh is more needful for you. 25 And being confident of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy of faith, 

 OBSERVATION: 

Paul was nearing the end of his life when he wrote this letter to the church at Phillipi. 

Some consider Paul's letter to the Philippians Paul's most positive letter. And he does not do as much correction in this letter as he does with the Galatians and Corinthians.   

Paul is sharing with the Philippians the conflict he is experiencing. He would prefer to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.   

Two important things to note. Paul refers to death as a departure. And departures are not nearly as final as death. Paul talks of staying in the flesh or departing.   

And Paul says that departing and being with Christ is far better. We should not feel sorry for loved ones who have departed to be with Christ. They are better off. Far better off.   

To live is Christ indicates that Paul could go but staying would be to please Jesus and help people. And he said it was a tough choice. In the end, Paul decided to stay and help the church at Philippi grow in their faith. He knew that their faith was important and would produce good things in their lives. One of those good things was joy. Our joy is directly tied into our faith.   

A great amount of important information is communicated in these short five verses.   

APPLICATION: 

Paul is a great example of a man who was submitted to the will of God and the Lordship of Jesus.  

He would rather go to heaven but staying would fulfill God's plan and bless God's people. Living for Christ is not always the easiest path. It is, however, the best path.   

Most of us are not currently facing stay or depart choices. But what are the choices that we can make that would reflect our obedience to Him, not our preferences? What are the choices you are facing that would honor the Lord and not be seen as a personal gain?  

I can't speak for everyone but living for Christ will almost always involve being a help, a blessing, to others. A blessing to God‘s kingdom. It may require more of your time or money, or energy. It may involve an element of sacrifice. It will always honor the Lord and yield rewards. And it will always be a choice you will never regret. Here and certainly in the life to come.   

PRAYER: 

Help me, Lord, make choices that honor You first. Help me be more of a blessing to Your kingdom.
