YOU ARE AN OVERCOMER

1 JOHN 4:4 NKJ 
4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 

 John was writing to the church regarding the spiritual influences that were in the world.  False prophets and the spirit of Antichrist.  That’s  enough to be a big concern.  All this negative spiritual stuff could be demoralizing.  But then John gives us verse four.  You are of God.  Born of God.  In God's family and there is no one greater than God.     

And you have overcome them.  Overcome who?  The spiritual forces of darkness that exist in the world.  Satan and all of his forces.  And notice John writes you have overcome them.  That's God-talk.  To Him, it's a done deal.   

Then John, writing by inspiration of the Holy Spirit, gives the reason that these believers stand on the winning side victorious over the forces of darkness.  Because the One who is in them, the Holy Spirit, is greater than Satan and his demonic powers that are in the world.  The greater One is in them.  Not just for them actually indwelling them.   

John was confident that the Holy Spirit is greater, more powerful, and smarter. And the greater One was in them to help them.  That put them in the overcomers seat.   

APPLICATION: 

When I came back to the Lord, this verse was one of the first verses I remember grabbing hold of.  And it's still one of my favorite verses today.   

Because God's word has said it, I can boldly say.  I am born of God.  I am an overcomer.  Greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world.  (I learned this verse in the King James Version.)  And since you have made Jesus your Lord, you can boldly say the same things.  We don't want to just hear a powerful truth such as this and think, well, that's nice.  No, we want to make it a part of our believing and thinking.  

John was not just writing to believers back then.  Spiritual things don't get old.  This truth is as real and powerful today as it was two thousand years ago.  So, jump in with both feet.  You are of God, and you are an overcomer.  The greater One, the Holy Spirit, is living in you!  

PRAYER: 

Thank You, Father.  I am of You.  I am Your child, a born overcomer because the greater One lives in me!  Today!
