TALKING TOO MUCH

Proverbs 10:19 NKJV In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, But he who restrains his lips is wise.

The Proverbs can be pretty pointed at times. They are filled with all kinds of practical wisdom and Proverbs often uses contrasts to point this Godly wisdom out.

This Proverb basically says if you talk a lot, you’ll sin a lot. But if you shut your mouth you’re smart.

In our culture, we do not typically place much value on our words, but God has a higher perspective (Isaiah 55:8-9 NKJV)

This tenth Proverb has ten references to mouth, lips, and words. Years later James, the Lord’s brother would encourage us to be quick to hear and slow to speak. (James 1:19) I wonder how much we would have been spared simply obeying what God says about talking.

APPLICATION

My mother claims I came out of the womb making noise and never stopped. Yes, I can attest to the fact that you can become less prone to talking.

This week practice catching yourself when you are talking. Then notice how often you are talking about yourself. Then, ask the Lord to help you practice being quiet and listening,

PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father help me become a wiser person in your sight. Help me dial back on talking and become a better listener.

SPECIAL NOTE:

For you normally quiet ones, to whom this devotional does not seem to apply, ask the Lord to help you in any area that you are not displaying His wisdom. And pray for those prone to a multitude of words.
