HOW GREAT IS OUR GOD

PSALM 139:1-6, 17-18 NKJ 
1 O Lord, You have searched me and known me. 
2 You know my sitting down and my rising up; 
You understand my thought afar off. 
3 You comprehend my path and my lying down, 
And are acquainted with all my ways. 
4 For there is not a word on my tongue, 
But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether. 
5 You have hedged me behind and before, 
And laid Your hand upon me. 
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; 
It is high, I cannot attain it. 
17 How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! 
How great is the sum of them! 
18 If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; 
When I awake, I am still with You. 

 Because God does not force Himself on anyone. Because He requires faith to come to Him. Therefore, many millions and even billions of people today do not know who He is. He could appear above the earth and reveal Himself, but He chooses not to. 

But this does not mean He is in any way weak or passive or diminished. He is God. Here in Psalm 139, David is expounding on the insight he has into God's power and nature. He, speaking by inspiration of the Holy Spirit, reveals God's amazing unlimited insight into us.   

God knows all our ways. From the moment we rise to the entire span of our lives, God knows.  

He knows our thoughts. He knows what we will say before we say it. He is before and behind us. His hand is upon us for good. No wonder David said this knowledge of God's unlimited comprehension is too wonderful; it is high and pretty much beyond our intellect to grasp.   

But David also reveals what God thinks of us and how much He thinks of us. David reveals that God's thoughts toward us are too many to even count. More than the sand! That's a lot of thoughts.   

We serve an utterly amazing God. How great is our God!   

APPLICATION: 

It's way too easy to underestimate God's power, knowledge, and ability. Too easy to dismiss Him to the back burner of our lives. Because He is not clamoring for our attention, it's too easy to not give Him much of our attention. 

This is why it's important to magnify and praise God. We must intentionally move Him to the front of our lives. Not relegate Him to a Sunday duty.   

In the Old Testament, we read where God is referred to as the Maker of Heaven and Earth. Old Testament prayers often began with extolling God as the Ruler and The Powerful One who has done great things. (see 2 Chronicles 20:6-7) This is a great way to pray. Start with the bigness and greatness of God. It certainly does not change Him. But it definitely reminds us of His greatness. How great is our God! 

PRAYER: 

Heavenly Father, You are the Maker of the heavens and the earth. And You are my Maker. You know everything and everything about me. You are great!
