ANOINTED TO KNOW

1 JOHN 2:20, 26-27 NKJ
20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.
26 These things I have written to you concerning those who try to deceive you. 27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.

When John was writing to the church, he was addressing a problem that still exists today.

The problem of deception.

People, believers no less, being pulled away from the truth. In this case, there were people who were trying to turn believers away from Jesus as the Christ.

In fact, John said that anyone denying Jesus as the Christ is a liar. One who denies the Father and the Son is antichrist. Pretty strong language and pretty serious stuff. Pulling people away from the Lord is a major issue.

But John writes to the believers that they do not have to be victims of deception. That they have a weapon against deception (my words). John is talking about the Holy Spirit. He refers to Him as the anointing. Bible scholars believe that John used this word to signify an anointing which had been experienced, a communication and reception of the Spirit.

In the Old Testament, we see prophets, priests, and kings set apart by God signified by the anointing with oil and equipping by the Holy Spirit. But after Jesus came, everyone had the privilege of receiving an anointing from God not of oil but by the Holy Spirit Himself. And not just for preachers or public figures but for all members of the body of Christ.

And within the Holy Spirit's equipping of all believers is the ability to know truth. The Holy Spirit teaches us and prompts us regarding what is true and right and what is deception. We are literally anointed to know.

APPLICATION:

This may seem to be a foreign concept to you. The idea that you are equipped by the Holy Spirit to have knowledge beyond your intellect may seem as real to you as science fiction. But as with most all spiritual things, our feelings and physical senses are not the standard of truth. God's word supersedes this physical realm. We understood that when we chose to believe in Jesus. And the same principle applies to the anointing we have from God. The Holy Spirit is real and has equipped us to know. The best thing we can do is thank God that we have an anointing, and we will know what to do and what is true. This is not a stretch to believe when we think about it. If God would send His Son for us, then He loves us enough to supernaturally equip us for our life here on earth.

PRAYER:

Thank You, Father. I have an anointing from You. The Holy Spirit is teaching me and causing me to know what is right. What an advantage.
